U.S. Open Betting Picks and Guide (2021)

Majors will return to primetime this weekend as the US Open returns to its Father’s Day Weekend timeslot, back at Torrey Pines just outside of San Diego, CA. One of the most iconic courses on tour, the breathtaking views are deceiving at a track known to eat even the best of the best alive.

Returning champion Bryson DeChambeau (+1700) comes into the week as the defending champion and second outright favorite, having won the fall version (COVID) of the event back in September.

The tour’s leader in the scoring clubhouse (averaging 69.77 this season), John Rahm, comes into this one the betting favorite, not only playing great golf but having won at Torrey Pines back in 2017.

Does anyone have a chance of taking out the odds board top two? Let’s take a closer look.

Course Preview (Torrey Pines Golf Course )

Owned by the city of San Diego, Torrey Pines is one of the rare elite courses in the world that is public, and just about anyone can get on for a price. The course lives in golf infamy for playing host to the 2008 Open, won by Tiger Woods (-1) in a playoff against Rocco Mediate, his last non-Masters major win.

An important feature to note, Torrey Pines is the longest course regularly played on the PGA Tour, coming in at 7,802 yards in total. It ranks #3 in the PGA Tour Media Guide’s “Toughest Courses” with an average score of 73.34, a +1.34 over par.

Outright PGA Betting Picks

Dustin Johnson (+1700 on FanDuel Sportsbook)

With two top 6s in the two tournaments he’s played since winning the Masters in November, it’s hard to look past DJ at 17/1 odds. His recent form shows he’s still just outside the top five in driving distance and trails only Rahm in scoring average at 69.864.

Despite missing the cut in two of his last three appearances here, those were nearly five years ago, and I expect a confident DJ coming off of a strong showing last week. The fact this guy only has two Majors is almost hard to believe, and I think we see another one here on Father’s Day.

Xander Schauffele (+1700 on FanDuel Sportsbook)

Having finished second here in this season’s Farmer Insurance Open at the same course, Schauffele should have this course figured out and just so happens to be playing some of the best golf of his career. Heading into this week, he ranks inside the top three on tour in both scoring average (69.87), and strokes gained (1.822).A

A San Diego native, the storyline angle fits as well, and it doesn’t hurt he’s never finished outside of sixth at a US Open event.

Long-shot Betting Picks

Tony Finau (+2800 on DraftKings Sportsbook)

With seven top 10 finishes already this season, Finau comes into this one once again with all signs pointing towards a strong result. Looking at his track record at Torrey Pines, he has four top 10 finishes over the last five years.

In the two majors so far this year, Finau has two top 10 finishes as well, including a T8 at the PGA Championship just a couple of weeks ago.

Max Homa (+11000 on FanDuel Sportsbook)

A California native, Homa seems to excel on the West Coast swing and should feel at home playing here this week. He has the distance off the tee to compete, and if he can reign in his irons, he should give himself plenty of chances in and around the green.

A strong start in his last outing at Muirfield Village should give him some additional confidence as well.
